I am not the biggest romantic comedy fan but I like when they do something different and try to change the genre, I am all for it. And that is exactly what Celeste and Jesse Forever did for me. It was beautiful, touching and never took itself too seriously that it would lose me. Often that is my problem with rom-com is that they end up trying to be something that they are not, this never tries that.
I kind of knew I was going to love this film right before I started it just because I am a sucker for anything Andy Samberg and Rashida Jones are in. Pairing them together just creates magical moments. They have such a great comedic flow that the movie never feels scripted. It’s a testament to their acting abilities but also to the script, that Jones also co-wrote.
There’s little moments in Celestre and Jesse Forever that just broke my heart. Because it’s all about them and their relationship. That no matter how much they love each other they aren’t right for each other and that is just too often a reality. It’s played beautifully and resonates so often as the truth. It’s shows how no matter how hard you try, a break up is messy even if you still love the other person.
I think the best thing about this film is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s funny, it’s witty and it’s also very truthful. It never goes beyond it’s premise, focuses on the main relationship and doesn’t go to long. It’s just a nice little film about relationship and life, just hidden really well into a very funny comedy. And I for one freaking loved it.
