I think sometimes the premise is better then the execution. The Bourne Identity is a good premise, a good example of an idea that is well executed but somehow I still found myself not as in love with it as I imagined I would. I think that the acting and direction are great but somehow I never connected to it as much as I wanted. It was just an okay film to me.
The thing about The Bourne Identity is that you can tell that it was created as a standalone at first and then turned with time into a franchise. I think Doug Liman as a great eye and it shows with this film. It tries to be something else then just a straight up action film, it works for the most part but then it becomes a lot of exposition and it completely lost me.
It has some great sequences, the car chase for one. But too often the action scenes are cut to quickly and makes it clear the often Damon didn’t do all the fight scenes. I wish that some scenes were more action oriented, my problem is that the film doesn’t always know what it wants to be. A thriller, an action film, a think piece. And it can’t blend everything together.
The Bourne Identity could have been great but I just wished that it was maybe something more. What? I don’t know yet but I know that it just didn’t work for me as much as I hoped it would.
