Day 16 – Jerry Maguire (1996)

Jerry Maguire is that movie everyone knows quotes of. Everyone quotes it, “Show me the money” or “You had me at Hello” are two quotes that everyone knows. I knew them even when I never saw the film before today. I assumed it was going to be a simple sport movie, instead I found a touching love story and friendship. It’s more about a man discovering how to balance his life and work and the relationships he makes along the way. It’s a touching movie that made me cry when I was least expecting it.

Tom Cruise is a good actor, he’s proven it but I do believe that Jerry Maguire is the best performance we have ever gotten from him. The script just showcases the best of Cruise and proves how great of an actor he is. It’s a script that has a lot of heart and just bleeds love even when everything goes wrong. If it’s not the relationship between Jerry and Rod that is full of love, it’s the one between Rod and his wife or Jerry and Dorothy. It’s a great thing to watch in a world that is exposed as full of cynicism.

Jerry Maguire took me by surprise. I was not expecting to one like it like that and two feel so much for the characters. Sports movie always get me but I stopped seeing Jerry Maguire has a sport movie very quickly, instead saw it as a romantic comedy more then anything else. So at the end when Rod is on the ground and you don’t know if he’s going to get up or not, I couldn’t help but have my eyes filled with water. It just wouldn’t stop and I found myself be relieved as soon as he got up. I knew what was going to happen, all sport dramas follow the same pattern but it still got me.

Jerry Maguire was not what I expected. I don’t know what I truly was expecting but it wasn’t what this film was. I instead found myself watching a romantic comedy more than a sports movie with actors that were perfectly cast and proved that they were truly great.
