I honestly don’t know how I feel about this film. On one hand, I liked parts of it, mostly the acting. On the other hand, by the end of it, I really didn’t care for it. Yes, the acting was great and made me feel like I was part of the film, some of the action sequences were really cool but I really wasn’t the target audience for this film and I felt it throughout.
Top Gun isn’t perfect, the story is very thin and other than Tom Cruise’s character the rest just seem underdeveloped. All the pilots all have the same character, they are all arrogant and it was almost impossible for me to relate or care for them. The only one I truly cared for was Goose and he dies so what was the point? I guess that was the point but still. I just wish it was a little bit less centred around their egos and maybe have a little bit more story…
Top Gun‘s action sequences are impressive, the sequences in the air are something that we don’t see a lot in films even today so it was interesting to see how they were shot and how they were edited together to make it look like the actors were actually there. (I’m interested to see if Tom Cruise will actually attempt to do one crazy stunt in one of them in the sequel).
Ultimately, Top Gun wasn’t for me. I wished I liked it a lot more then I did but the truth is that this film just feels out of its time. The treatment for the characters is very one-sided and it just feels like all of them are the same even if we are meant to believe they aren’t. Will I watch the sequel when it comes out? I don’t know, I guess I’ll wait and see the response to it really.
